An illustration created late last year (with a ridiculously quick deadline) for a Jenny Craig booklet. This was one of five illustrations created by different female artists. Still yet to see the printed product. I'm usually asked to slim girls down so it was one of the few times the client kept requesting, 'make her bigger!'.

victorian name brooches

While I'm on a roll, this is my first ace op shop find of 2012, a sweet Victorian name brooch, Alice. I did some research on this and they were popular in the 1880's to the 1920's. The plainer ones were given to the servants as gifts whilst the more detailed ones were given as sweetheart brooches. There was a strong botanical and Japanese influence during this period which would explain the fan. I'd love to know the history of Alice. Check out these other examples below. Fanny, now there's a name!

It's the new year and I'm finally getting my act together for a post. There are so many things I don't get round to posting and then it goes past a point and I forget. So here's one of my fave finds of the year from my local op shop. A collection of mannequin hands. A pair of closed fists also came in the lot which would make awesome doorknobs or coat hooks. I have a thing for hands and all things hand made. They are the tools of my craft, and lets face it would suck not to have any. So wave em like you just don't care.

Early November is the best festival of the year celebrated in Mexico, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. I've been working on a Frida Kahlo piece and thought it timely to share these beautiful reference pics of her. The colours and adornment are so amazing.

Unfortunately I missed the festival when I was in Mexico but I did see Frida's house and some ace Mexican wrestling which kinda made up for it. Seriously if you are ever in Mexico City, go to the wrestling, it's freakin AWESOME! That's me in the El Santo shirt post match.

Melbourne Music Week is fast approaching and I'll be showing some CD and record sleeve artwork as part of Off the Hip's 'Colour Your Mind' exhibition. Other artist's from their label including the 50's kooky cartoon inspired Lluis Fuzzhound and rock photographer Carbie Warbie will also be displaying their works, sketches and inspiration. Love this by Pan Ron, a 60's Cambodian singer. And how cool is the dancing? After more research I came across this doco about Cambodian rock music in the 60's and how it was nearly destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in the 70's. I'm not sure if this movie is recent but it looks great, although so sad.

My birthday was in April but I was so frantic I didn't have time to post these beauties.

The artwork was made by Tim, bits of collected paper and found objects from the street, perfectly stitched together. How ace is it? I think he should have an exhibition of these, although I wouldn't want to part with them.

This beauty was a gift from my sisters, a 40's mannequin head. Isn't she amazing? Goes well with my other mannequin head found in NY. She needs a nice stand for her.

I bought one of these Mexican bandit puppets for my nephew when I was in Mexico and always thought, 'damn why didn't I get one for myself?' Some friends found three vintage ones. Ivy is already eyeing them off.

Other ace pressies included a wooden travelling plein air artist case, a signed and numbered Beatesville book, and sweet 60's tunes (psychotic reaction 45" hello!) How great are my friends and family for buying me such arty, kooky, rockin' pressies? Thank you!

A few months of dreaming in patterns, and I have my folio ready for a massive licensing show which opens this Sunday in New York. My agent will be spruiking my wares and with any luck we might get a bite. I'd love to jump on a plane to check it out (any excuse to go to New York right, and to leave this hideous weather!) but I gotta get back to the studio and paint. So there has been big birthday number one in our house, in which I had to discover my inner baking goddess. There have been family visitors (one very excited Nanna), painting, illustrating and a garden that is just about complete. I promise to be back soon.

(These are the cupcakes I baked which everyone thought looked like boobs. Someone even said, 'I didn't realise this was an erotic party...ha')

Check out these ace vintage mobile homes found via Tiki Lisa. Now that is my kinda holiday home. I would so want to stay in this caravan park. Complete with white picket fences and kooky gardens. And look at the interior in the advertisement! Lisa took the photos in Pomona, CA on Route 66 at the Foothill Village Mobile Home Park. You can check out more on her flickr site.

Xmas came and went so fast and I didn't quite get around to a Xmas tree, so this antique carved wooden deer head became it. It's one of a pair bought back from Bali. We always regret not buying travel momentoes, so went for it and spent the last day walking around trying to find suitcases to fit them into....ha. The carvings are Javanese and they would have sat either side of a house to keep the bad spirits away.

It's been a long process but we are finally in the midst of landscaping our garden (just to make things more hectic before Xmas). Think mid century Palm Springs with organic shapes, crazy paving, rock features and some nice lawn for Ivy to crawl about on. Here are some inspiration pics. If you're wondering why I'm a bit slack on the blog front these days, it's because work has been busy, we've had family stay and my 9 month old is taking up more time especially now she's crawling (which is cute but tiresome).

So I'll try and post a few things to make up for it! A few weeks ago Beci and I did a gift swap. I sent a little folksy embroidery her way and in return this cute yellow fellow turned up. Aint blogland swell?

I heard some very annoying news about my neighbourhood since illustrating Balaclava for the Design Files calendar. As it turns out I need to add more coffee cups and ditch those records. Yep, Wall is taking over the music store Second Spin. I'm totally bummed. Wall (apparently) offered more bucks to the landlord and they succumbed. The high rent on the strip has already seen the Asian grocery and other small businesses disappear. That's what the strip needs, more cafes! While we're at it let's add some more chemists, bakeries and $2 stores.

Design Files have joined forces with Jacky Winter to produce the Neighbourhood Calendar launching next week! Twelve Australian illustrators were asked to draw their neighbourhood. I was lucky enough to scribble for East St Kilda/Balaclava. More info here on the project and the artists involved.

Here is another project Tim and I worked on together last year. I designed and illustrated this identidy logo for 'Nourish', a boutique advertising and marketing agency that works with food and beverage brands. Tim worked on the design side including stationary, etc and added some nice embossed touches. More photos of Nourish Brands to come.

I have a couple of Risograph Prints in this group exhibition by Jacky Winter artists.

The Risograph combines various printing technologies such as mimeograph, photocopying, screen printing and offset lithography to produce a signature-style, similar to that of a silkscreen, but with more 'character'. This Japanese technology uses environmentally friendly soy based inks and for these prints we are also using a carbon neutral, 100% recycled, archival paper.

All two colour limited edition works for sale at $50 each!

Ok, so it been a long time between drinks (or no drinks in my case). Things have been kinda busy here. I have some new work to post when I get round to it, but more deadlines this week and Xmas is just around the corner! So in keeping with the Xmas spirit and after seeing Pip's post, here's lil ole me looking kinda freaked on Santas knee. Clearly the words of 'never taking lollies from strangers' (especially hairy ones) are ringing true.

Lovely Lucy from the Design Files is a guest blogger at Design Sponge this week. She has asked a few fellow Melburnians (including myself), to post about their fave spots in their own hood. I should point out that Batch on Carlisle St also does great coffee (but I ran out of room!).
I would have loved a bar on my map but it seems that no one can get a bar right this side of town. There is the Carlisle Wine bar but no real pubs that play decent music that you can call a local. Everyone seems to think that renovated and lifeless is best. The Greyhound renovation is the most current example. I'm too scared to go in to see the abomination (you can see a bright fluoro lit bar from outside and I'm sure there is no one in there). Can someone please open a cool pub?

Why are so many bands coming out in March? It's particularly bad timing for me. First the Pixies, now Pavement. I did, however, manage to get tix for King Khan and the Shrines in Jan. Hoorah! My sister and I spent many days drawing and creating paper doll clothes when we were kids. We would watch old 50's movies and copy outfits. I even remember some crazy sci fi creations too. I think we had one old 50's doll which we copied to make our own versions. Like these hilarious ones found on Swapatorium. I wish we still had them.

Remember this from a scene in Ghost World? I've always wondered where this crazy masked wig out came from after seeing a snippet in the film. It's from a 1966 Indian film Gumnaam. Thanks to the Shimmy's for pointing it out. Oh and Jan Pechachaan-ho means 'We should get to know each other' in Hindi.

I just saw this film last night, about the early 90's DIY art scene in New York, featuring the awesome Margaret Kilgallen, plus Barry Mc Gee and Shepard Fairey, etc. Well worth a look, the film is a little all over the place but inspiring and funny. I'm a collector and hoarder. I found some more dress patterns last week, (this spectacular 40's slip no less), and went through my collection which has seriously taken over a whole cupboard (must to the annoyance of my partner). I'm instantly drawn to the illustrations. I love the 60's dresses and try to make these, but I also love the 50's stuff which is increasingly harder to find.

I received some great news last week by way of the worst phone line ever on my crappy mobile (thank you 3). Amongst the crackle I heard the words 'illustration' and 'won'. Then in an email I was told that two of my artworks, 'Josephine' and 'Peacock Envy' have been selected as part of Luerzer's Archive 200 Best Illustrators worldwide. How awesome!

I bought this print, 'The cat returns' from Ghostpatrol a couple of weeks ago. We have a giant cat so I thought it was appropriate (although our cat should be pulling strings inside a human form). It's now up on the lounge wall with these 4 Jim Flora prints I bought for my partner Tim a while ago. (That's one of Tim's work's 'One Fifty' on the right).
